A year later the project was renamed CinePaint. On July 4, 2002, Film Gimp was released to the general public on SourceForge. Although everyone at GIMP (mostly based in Germany) thought it was dead, Film Gimp development continued independently in Hollywood at Rhythm & Hues and then spread to Sony Pictures Imageworks. In 2000 the GIMP hackers and Silicon Grail ceased work on the Hollywood-based development of GIMP. The GIMP student effort was mostly taken over by hackers who wanted to further the GNU cause. GIMP had begun in 1995 as a class project at the University of California Berkeley, but the original student developers left GIMP after graduation. By 2000 a CVS branch of GIMP known as Film Gimp offered that feature. The Windows port of CinePaint is currently broken, but may be available again in 2005.ĬinePaint began in 1998 as a project sponsored by motion picture technology company Silicon Grail (later acquired by Apple) and visual effects studio Rhythm & Hues. A native Mac Aqua port of CinePaint is in development.

It doesn't yet support editing, DV, M-JPEG, AVI, Quicktime, or MPEG.ĬinePaint runs on all popular flavors of Linux and on Mac OS X as an X11 application. It does not yet support audio playback or synchronized 24fps playback. Support for 16-bit half float is coming.ĬinePaint includes a built-in flipbook for playback of image sequences. Internally, CinePaint works in 8-bit unsigned, 16-bit unsigned, 16-bit binary fixed point, 16-bit chopped float, or 32-bit IEEE float.

For historical reasons, CinePaint's native format is 16-bit XCF, a variant of the GIMP format. It also supports less exotic formats such as JPEG, GIF and PNG.

Glasgow, a completely new code architecture being used for CinePaint, is expected to make a new Windows version possible and is currently under production. HDR creation from bracketed exposures is easy.ĬinePaint is currently available for UNIX and Unix-like OSes including Mac OS X and IRIX. It supports the Cineon, DPX, and OpenEXR image file formats. CinePaint supports a 16-bit color managed workflow for photographers and printers, including CIE*Lab and CMYK editing. įeatures that set CinePaint apart from its photo-editing predecessor include the frame manager, onion skinning, and the ability to work with 16-bit and floating point pixels for high dynamic range imaging (HDR). Under its former name Film Gimp, CinePaint was used for films such as Scooby-Doo (2002), Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001), The Last Samurai (2003) and Stuart Little (1999).

It is free software under the GNU General Public License. The mainline gimp plans to add (but has not yet added) these features. The main reason for this adoption over mainline gimp was its support for high bit depths (greater than 8-bits per channel) which can be required for film work. It enjoyed some success as one of the earliest open source tools developed for feature motion picture visual effects and animation work.

It is a fork of version 1.0.4 of the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP). CinePaint is an open source computer program for painting and retouching bitmap frames of films.
